Chaz Jankel
"Too Woo Lady Kong"

Chaz Jankel is perhaps best known for his work with Ian Dury and The Blockheads.

Chaz Jankel is perhaps best known for his work with Ian Dury and The Blockheads. He played keyboards and guitar with the band and co-wrote tracks including Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll, Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and Spasticus Autisticus.
In addition to this, Chaz enjoyed a successful solo career during the early 80s, releasing three albums on A&M Records. His biggest hit during this period was the smash Glad To Know You (co-written by Ian Dury) and Ai No Corrida which became an international chart hit for Herbie Hancock. In addition to being a favourite of Larry Levan and a big Paradise Garage tune, Glad To Know You, sat atop the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks.
While Chaz was recording Glad To Know You he experimented with different versions of the track prior to laying down the vocals, utilising a variety of different styles and influences. One of these versions was titled To Wou Lady Kong (which, the eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed, is an anagram of Glad To Know You), later to become
To Woo Lady Kong.
Nowadays extremely rare and hard to come by, To Woo Lady Kong is a mid-tempo, blissed-out, dub-influenced groove, guaranteed to spread that summer vibe wherever it is played, with the added benefit of giving the trainspotters something to talk about once the familiar melody comes in.
Chaz' creativity and willingness to experiment in the studio is further demonstrated by 3,000,000 Synths -- a cacophony of synthesisers (though perhaps not quite 3,000,000), drum machines and spoken word vocal samples of Ian Dury during a Annie Mack interview. Recorded in 1981 by Chaz and producer Philip Bagenal, the track, if you'll forgive the cliche, sounds as if it could have been made yesterday. This pioneering electro record pre-dates Detroit Techno and has had a massive influence on contemporary dance and electronic music that can be heard in the work of artists such as Justice, Maurice Fulton and the DFA.
Tirk is very excited to announce the release of a double A-side reissue of To Woo Lady Kong and 3,000,000 Synths - in both it's original form and a new re-edit for modern dancefloors from Sean P (Disco Not Disco).
